A little competition: Can anyone come up with a collective noun for a gathering of countertenors (as in flock of birds, pride of lions, etc.)? Answers on a postcard, please. And it goes without saying that suggestions like "hoot" or "screech" will be immediately disqualified ...

Saskia,
Thanks so much for the info., Saskia. I see that in addition to "Riccardo Primo", there will be performances of Handel's "Teseo" with Terry Wey and the ever-delightful Valer. Looks like I shall be seeing a lot of Karlsrühe next year ...
Suzie_g,
I like the "starburst" idea ...

I should be in the audience for "Ariodante" myself later - "intermittents" (currently serenading the opera-going public with saucepans and vuvuzelas) permitting. It's a Richard Jones production, which probably means acres and acres of really naff wallpaper!

Here's a couple of interesting productions for anyone who can get to Brussels and/or Amsterdam easily.
La Monnaie (Brussels) will be showing alternating performances of "Tamerlano" and "Alcina". The productions will then go on to the Stadsschouwburg in Amsterdam. The stage director for both productions is Pierre Audi who directed the TCE production of "Orlando Furioso". Tamerlano will be sung by the wonderful Christophe Dumaux who should be damned good, given the relish with which he seems to play "bad boys"! The rest of the cast ain't too shabby, either ...
Booking for both productions opens on 2nd December.

I just had to post this enchanting little gem! I was surprised by how well the countertenor voice suits this Rimsky-Korsakov piece. Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov wrote some beautiful songs and "vocalises"; it would be fantastic if Yurij could record some of them for our greater pleasure since he is uniquely placed among CTs in being able to sing the Russian rep. I'm glad he seems to have dropped the beard and moustache though - I don't think they did much for him. What IS it with countertenors and their penchant for facial hair??
Subject: Re: Other voices 10th September 2014, 13:29
Artemis
I´m very glad, you are interested in Russian repertoire as well! This is a song of Lel, a young handsome sheperd (and a shawm- player) with whom is in love Snegurochka, an Ice- girl in old Russian fairy tales. So it is an perfect match!
The fascial hair....hmmmmm...I guess, at the beginning of their career the CT always are forced to prove their real " masculinity" this way.

Thanks for the background info., Jana! I didn't know this opera and had to look it up. Alas, things did not turn out well for poor Snegurochka; this is what happens when mythical creatures make the mistake of falling in love with humans (cf. Rusalka)! Lel is a "pants rôle" apparently - not the first for Yurij, as he has also played Ratmir.
Sadly, the Russian rep. (well, much of the vocal repertoire, anyway) is rather neglected in the west. The Met's recent production of "Prince Igor", which is standard rep. in Russia, was the first since 1917! The same goes for Polish music (other than Chopin); there's some fabulous operatic music by Moniuszko, Nowowiejski and Zelenski, for example, which is rarely heard (never mind performed!) outside Poland ...

You´re welcome, Artemis!
The best Ratmir could be Eric Kurmangaliev- the first Russian countertenor, who already died some time ago.....here we still have another Russian operatic " pants- role" - Wanya from " Iwan Susanin" ( Or " Life for the Zar" ) by Glinka.

Gosh! He was a real male mezzo (which is what I think Franco Fagioli is, actually)! I think it's great that men are taking on some of the pants rôles previously the preserve of mezzo-sopranos - although I like mezzos a lot and wouldn't want to be without Ann Hallenberg, Sarah Connolly or Alice Coote - so there's room for both.
Thanks, Jana!

Talking of pants rôles, here's Susan Graham singing what I've come to think of as "The Mezzo's Lament". Alice Coote also complains that she wears the pants so well that nobody wants to see her in a frock - although she did once sing Charlotte in "Werther" when, presumably, pants were not required ...
Subject: Re: Other voices 12th September 2014, 19:44
Ohhhh...these pants .... poor M-m Graham )))) Indeed, some ladies do it so well that you don´t really want them to appear in a frock . Alice Coote told once, she war in a hurry to get her plane after performance and kept her " masculine" make-up and suit on - so , as she arrived, her husband did not recognise her at the airport.
About Eric Kurmangaliev- yes, he was unique and never wore a beard to proove his " manhood" - this was also the reason he haven´t got the first prize at the singing competition in the Netherlands as he was very young - some of the jury members have not believed he is a ...well, boy. He looked that kind of smooth because he was kazakh and they don´t have much fascial hair in general...
Here is a short movie about him in Russian, where we can see also how great dancer he was. Especially Orlofsky- piece!
