Interesting video, I didn´t know about this countertenor yet- Florin Cezar Ouatu . Very unusual "Venti , turbini". And amazing costume of F. Fagioli at the very beginning!

Jana,
Florin Cezar Ouatu was Romania's entry for the Annual Schlockfest otherwise known as the Eurovision Song Contest last year (under the catchy name of "Cezar"). I believe he was sporting a Dracula costume at some stage. I think Franco's "castrato" costume is just fabulous!

oops....I never watched this "Eurovision". So, I´d prefer Cezar with "Venti, turbini" and all this baroque stuff! He looks indeed a bit like the young Robert de Niro and has really good masculine voice! Could be Tolomeo as well as Cesare!
The costume of " Il Divo" Fagioli fits him so well!

Good evening, Jana, Artemis and other good people! I think I can fill in a bit on Florin Cezar Ouatu... There is a fantastic DVD recording of Pergolesi's opera "La Salustia" made in 2011 in Jesi, Italy. He sings the role Alessandro. He's very good in his performance! Highly recommended if you like italian baroque opera.
There is also a good CD-recording with Cezar of Antonio Vivaldi's opera "Ottone in Villa" from 2008. Here he sings the role of Caio. He's very convincing in his arias.
Then there is the very special "Amor Oriental - Händel alla Turca" which fuses turkish music from the time of Handel with Mr. Handl's own opera arias. This is really something else! You're in for a few surprises if you take the chance...
This is just a titbit of what Ouatu has done in the classical field so far... He's done a lot more, but so far not much has been issued officially...
Viva la musica barocca!!

Morten,
Thanks for the info. The Turkish fusion CD sounds really interesting. I think Valer Barna Sabadus has done something similar, hasn't he? I'm just off to Paris for the lovely Valer's first solo recital at the Salle Gaveau. Perhaps I'll get the opportunity to ask him?

Artemis: Good morning!
I know they've done concerts with the same orchestra, The Pera Ensemble, from Instanbul. Recordingwise, Valer is featured on no less than 3 different albums of that said ensemble: "Kaffee für den König"(2011) , "Baroque Oriental"(2011) and "Café"(2012). - I think "Baroque Oriental" is the best... I wish you good luck with the concert in Paris!!

Last night I went to a concert at Oslo Opera house entitled Baroque Extravaganza - Barokksolistene with Kristina Hammarström, Johannes Weisser and David Hansen (the countertenor ) It was amazing It wasn't a sold out concert to say the least, I was in 2nd tier and the row opposite mine was completely empty, but the audience nevertheless brought a lot of energy.... After David's first aria they went bananas The first half ended with Son nata a lagrimar with Kristina & David and they had such great chemistry. There were great pieces by the orchestra as well, notably a Vivaldi concerto (L'estro armonico). The conductor was kind of jumping up and down with his violin during this which reminded me of JCS a little bit During the 2nd half David had two arias taken from his CD, the first was magnificent but the second....OMG. He had the audience around his little finger. The coloratura parts were amazing, and the whole orchestral outro was drowned out by thundering applause (standing O) - much like the end of act 1 of Artaserse with Franco Fagioli. I felt so grateful to be able to experience a moment like that live and not just on youtube. I do recommend David's Rivals CD (it was often reviewed together with Philippe's Farinelli CD and Fagioli's Caffarelli).

Sounds like a great concert, Karenpat! David Hansen is a very charismatic performer if his Youtube clips are anything to go by. I know he's Australian but isn't he based in Norway? Kristina Hammarström is fabulous, imo. I've been to several of her concerts and she never disappoints. She was a great Bradamante in "Orlando Furioso".
I've just remembered, I have seen David Hansen on stage. He had the thankless rôle of Athamas in a really crappy production of "Semele". I'd love to see him again in more favourable circumstances.

Thanks for the review!
I like very much the selection of airs made by Hansen, the castrati's reperotire is so full of jewels. However I have to say even if Hansen has very good qualities I am totally spoiled by Philippe's brilliant technique, so everytime I listen to Hansen I can't help spotting his weakness. He uses too much pressure and his coloratura is not very precise. I'm sure he will get better but the airs are too demanding for his level of expertise. On the other side I think he is a good actor and that's a big thing for someone who is interested in operatic roles! He is based in Norway because he is married there

The first part: Händel The second part: Hasse and Gluck Much applause! The audience did not want to go and three encores.

Thanks for the article, Jana. My German is only (unfortunately ) at schoolgirl level, but am I correct in thinking that there is a rather arch, snide tone to this article? Max can eat chocolate covered ants for all I care, as long as they fuel his glorious voice. And why the obsession with his coiffure and clothes? Anyway, we Cencic nuts have long since learned to appreciate "Fifi" and its infinite variety! I hope "Die Welt" paid for this meal and I hope the bill was HUGE.

Hm....it is ...let me find the plausible words... typical German " sarcasm", they think that they are very humorous, but actually it look like quite disgusting and grudge.
Here to comfort us- a little movie about the new performance of Franco Fagioli in " Riccardo Primo"! Very baroque staging , costumes ...reminds me very of " Il St.Alessio"...

Thanks for confirming my suspicions, Jana. Actually, I think it has probably more to do with a certain type of journalism rather than German humour. I must say that I'm rather surprised at "Die Welt"; I thought it was supposed to be a beacon of shining light in the Springer publishing empire!
The production of "Riccardo Primo" looks absolutely to die for .. Who is the lady singing with Franco in the videoclip? She looks a bit like Blandine Staciewicz but it's difficult to tell underneath all the stage make-up ...

Thanks, Artemis and Nath29, unfortunately, as yet there is no plan to produce a DVD (though many in Karlsruhe and elsewhere had hoped so, considering the prominent names involved). The artistic director of the Karlsruhe Handel festival said "Perhaps next year." Note the "perhaps" - I am not so confident - they already missed the chance to record our fantastic "Radamisto" in 2009/10 (though this was another leading administrational team, but the new one, it seems, is no more active in this behalf). But good news nevertheless: at least there will be a CD! And you do not have to wait till this will be published, probably in time for the next Handel festival. The production will be broadcast on April 13, the radio station is SWR2 (http://www.swr.de/swr2/-/id=7576/otnbb1/index.html), look for the button "Webradio" on the website. R.
