| Now the German EMI website of PhJ - not his official website, which is of course also by EMI - give a different title for his "best of" CD. The dvd is supposed to be called "La voix des reves. Greatest Moments in Concerts", here: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]but the CD is supposed to be titled "The Voice". Here: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Both to appear 2. of November. And the CD will according to Amazon be a double! | |

| I wonder if anybody can enlighten me. If I buy the CD, do I get concert versions or recorded versions? For example, is Ohime chio cando (sorry, I can’t do the accents) the fabulous Ambronary performance or the track from Teatro d’Amore? You may ask why CD when DVD is available. Well, I sometimes enjoy listening to Philippe sing in my own private space. Not that anything will stop me from buying the CD!! P.S. For those in the UK, you can pre-order from Presto Classical [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]and the CD [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] | |

| Morten, I'll do it, but these days I'm quite busy, so it will take me a little. Espcially because this Italian is very very baroque!! | |

| The original text is very difficult to translate . The author enjoys writting in a very baroque and cofusing way even if my understanding of Italian is very good! So please don't be very hard on me. I didn't doublecheck the translation but I hope you get the idea. Any doubts, just post them and I'll try to clarify! Despite of our local cackling budgies (he means those who enjoy bad-talking, I don’t know if the translation works in English) who trashed the counter-tenor practice with their own mouths full of drool. The same who on their own opinion the counter-tenor practice attacks Horne, Sutrherland et alii’s sacred virtue (they can defend on their own, in case they’d need it; even if it can be doubted especially taking into account the lessons given to “la crème” of counter-tenors by Horne), counter-tenor’s voice “lives and fights with us”; among this practice, Philippe Jaroussky’s voice is one of the most emblematic, so also one of the most discussed/criticised. His voice is possibly the bluntiest “sopranist”, because of his extreme clarity and brilliance, a true cantor angel: skilled singer, gifted with portentous musicality as well as a complete and absolute control of his emission, which accompanied with equilibrium, fluency and liquid virtuosity are part of his strengths. When Jaroussky uses his talent in the expressive level, he obviously obtains characters that excel in sweetness and exhausting languishment, but he also reduces a lot the inherent ambiguity that was implicit in castrati. That’s also explains why (but it’s a very personal and subjective approach, so to use carefully) he would not be my choice for Monteverdi’s Nerone or Haendel’s Rinaldo. But, he absolutely will be my best interpreter of Ariodante, Ottone, Sesto and out of discussion remains the masterpiece he creates as Landi’s Sant’Alessio with Christie. In the same realm of works of art there are also Jaroussky’s recitals and concerts with l’Ensemble Matheus di Jean-Christophe Spinosi, L’Arpeggiata di Christina Pluhar or l’Ensemble Artaserse, this one founded by him. He collected numerous memorable successes in Europe, excluding Italy, because of the Italian masochism and also his chronically cultural backwardness. Many excerpts from those concerts are part of this DVD (there is also a CD version): 2:45h full of splendour. All pieces are purely Music, for instance the sublime duet “Son nata a lacrimar” from Giulio Cesare (Anne Sofie von Otter is extraordinary, the arches of Concert d’Astrée are excruciating under the intense direction of Emmanuelle Haïm); or the portentous “Oblivion soave”; “Lasciate Averno”, from Rossi’s Orfeo, is an unexpected jewel, about what all the former renditions only get a pale idea before this musical high level. There are also pieces, that even in a concert rendition evolve in a pure theatrical joy. So to speak, when a “divinissima” Marie-Nicole Lemieux entered unexpected in the second voice of Vivaldi’s Orlando Furioso “Nel profondo cieco mondo”, developing an electric and “di bravura” contest, where both tried to overpower each other: and it is like picturing Horne “repelling” the advance of one abhorred counter-tenor and step by step she would become fond of him and at the end both together would sing a exulting hymn to “canto” (Spinosi also participated with a very low note!). All this accompanied by “sport-like” ovations, meanwhile Jaroussky leaves “defeated” before a shining Lemieux, because it’s known the grand dive is always a woman. Other awesome masterpiece is the “Ciaccona di Paradiso e dell’Inferno”, where Jaroussky sings about the happiness of the former. Meanwhile two Arpeggiata’s musicians, seated and with their instruments on their laps, answer him singing about the horrible Inferno with cavernous voices, that even though with musical quality, no pitched (this is actually being in Inferno). When Jaroussky sings about the eternal light of the Eliseus, both musicians put their sunglasses among exultant ovations. Even more inebriating (the ovation) was the one after the funny “Le lion est mort ce soir”, sang “a capella” withy Quatuor Ebène. The violiniste’s great baritone voice started with the first verse, the other three follow him in “controcanto vocalizzato” while Jaroussky played with the high notes in a masterpiece full of irony, lightness, sauciness as well as masterly musicality. Afterwards, all of them played the sublime “Lascia ch’io pianga” from Rinaldo, Jaroussky couldn’t actually play Almirena, but in concert, he certainly can and he is excellent. He started as a violinist and he was really good, as far as we can judge from Sostsakovic’s “Preludio per due violini e piano”, where he played with Renaud Capuçon, and Gautier with his violoncello. The latter was the musician in a wonderful Massenet’s Élegie. The end was even more mesmerizing, Jaroussky totally on fire with Lemieux in “Sento un certo non so che” from Poppea di Monteverdi and Sances’ “Lacrimosa beltà”. Those two pieces became a baroque jam session, where unexpected improvisation pervaded the isntrumentist and the singers, everyone was singing and playing, the perfect example of the modernity of Baroque repertoire (it could be at least where there is the possibility to listen to it live, in theatres or concert halls). Come il faut, at the end, The Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden was in standing ovation. | |

| Hi, Morten!
Any time! Yes, it's Pilar. It's not my best work I must admit, but I guess it's clear the author really loves Philippe's voice. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I am also happy to help! It's quite usual to fin italian critics about Philippe's work, it's a pity!
Have a nice Sunday! | |
