'Teatro d'Amore' Opera arias and madrigals, by Monteverdi.
As Christina Pluhar puts it: "The most admirable aspect of Monteverdi's work is the huge diversity of the composition techniques he masters and mixes with such genius. In this recording we chose to highlight the variety of his secular compositions. The modernity that runs like a red thread through his music, lending it a timeless quality even in the twenty-first century, stands out clearly when we consider, for instance, his use of ostinato bass. The walking bass was supposedly invented by jazz musicians in the 1940s, but in Monteverdi we can already find ostinato basses that deviate from usual seventeenth century ostinatos, are unique and still sound very modern."
