rikkapijemy, you are right, but it is much more than that I fear.

Here is an excerpt of the review of "Artaserse" concerning Franco Fagioli, written by the same author:

I personally haven't any doubt what is going on there. It's a pity. But it is business. You'll find more examples like that....

Translation by tuffy942 flowers

Quote :
He is one of the exceptionally unique voices. Philippe Jaroussky's voice like that of Farinelli which he interpreted this evening as the latest CD in his repertory is undoubtedly one. A pure voice , immaculate, the very innocence which filled the theater so graciously.

Accompanied by a Venice Baroque Orchestra seated at places a little bit rickety the countertenor has , in spite of the difficulty of the arias of Porpora, enveloped and put magic, fascination and delight in a public who came en masse to cheer the artist.

Consecrated to the relationship between Farinelli and his teacher, Jaroussky gives us Porpora's arias, who was known for his unrivaled talent as melodist , reviving and presenting at the head of the scene this fact and not just as one in many during the baroque period. This gives an added value to his incomparable and singular voice that swelled and captivated with no exception.

A difficult and challenging program seems made especially for the singer with the angel voice and a vocal incredible ability that was Farinelli. So the airs alternated fast constructs with long phrases where embellishments and ornamentation were chained with vocalizes, leaps of crazy rages with poignant arias made of light and tenuous nuances. As well as retaining his breath so long to permit the artist to arrive and the end of the phrases without difficulty, gliding between the fastest or slowest. At the same time the anxiety of seeing the orchestra walk on eggs with each cadence and lyric flight.

The first aria,"Mira il cielo", extract of Ariana gives flow to sweet candor, an awesome ravishment and enthusiasm that is almost childlike. The venetian brilliance of the orchestration makes the partition virtuosic in the image of the great concerts of Maestro Vivaldi, a golden ornament typical of the italian baroque which characterize the union of the fastest arias of the program. The mastery and the ease tests the musician as the singing catches firmly the attention of the spectator literally glued to his lips. The next air "Si pietoso il tuo labbro" extract of Semiramide riconosciuta will not fail to move and trouble more than reason. An emotion which will arrive at his height at the final cadence, elegant, …….(precautionneuse a souhait).

In fact one will feel the great exactitude and simplicity that the musician gives in his interpretations, never overdone, never caricaturized. In spite of the difficulty of the repertoire the artist does not cal in the entrapment of show of force, or even that of passionate or weepy exaggeration .The interpretation of "Come nave in ria tempest" fiery and virtuosic was proof as was "Alto Giove' where the sensitivity and delicacy grabs you from the first vocalization, starting pianissimo and building up into a crescendo-decrescendo at the end.

Adding a note in the program a musical intermezzo Le Concerto for flute interpreted by Anne Fursec was a fun idea, and no less pleasurable than the fact that it is an instrumentt represented too rarely and interpreted with much brio. She was warmly applauded and congratulated for her playing. Jaroussky gave 3 bisses and saw the entirety of the theater give him a standing ovation very wlll deserved. A splendid soiree fine and delicate, full of intensity, made of musical vibes as well as emotional ones.

Philippe was awesome and so nice and charming! He will come to the US next year and I am so happy I will have another chance to see him again!
